A “fav” means adding an artwork by another artist to your gallery of favorites. Authors also thank members who “fav” one or more pieces of their art. The author of the art usually replies to a comment with a thank you to the person who left the comment. Comments on submitted artwork tend to be very positive and and usually contain emoticons. Interviewees talked about how friendly people were and how much they learned there. In our observations and interactions on the site we mostly observed that people were very nice and polite. Our interviewees came from different countries, age ranges, and occupations. DeviantArt meets the criteria for a “3rd place” as described by Oldenburg (1999) in The Great Good Place. This paper will argue that DA is a constructionist community of practice. It will also present the results of participant observations and semistructured interviews with 6 members. This paper will use Amy Jo Kim’s design principles as a lens for examining DA as an online community. DA also has many features that encourage the members to form and sustain a sense of community, such as notes, groups, forums, journals, contests, tutorials, points, badges, and more. Any member can upload a work of art, which is called a deviation, and other members can comment on the deviation. It also has 160,000 unique daily uploads of art and over 220 million pieces of art. As of Mathe site has 65,000,000 unique visitors and 2.5 million page views a month.
